As a few of you know, I’ve decided to go back to school to study Nutrition. Before anyone gets worried, we still hold strong to our conviction that I am to remain a Homemaker, therefore I’m taking as many courses as possible online, at home, and will utilize the help of our current Nutritionist, who has been incredibly supportive. The school is accredited so I will be able to sit for the exam at the end to be Certified, but will be a Certified Nutritionist, not a Registered Dietician, so will stay in the Natural/ Alternative Health field. And based on what you’ll read below, you’ll understand why staying in Natural Health is really where I’d rather be. Actually I’d love to be a Personal Wellness Coach, as is another local homeschool Mama. Towards the end, I have a practicum, so if any of you want to volunteer to have your lifestyle analyzed and a fitness and nutrition program created, let me know. I’m going to need several, so speak up! This is at least a year away, so there’s time.
I’m known as one of those weirdos who strives for natural birthings, co-sleeps, encourages child-led weaning when breastfeeding, uses cloth diapers, wears a baby sling, eats as organically as possible, homeschools, uses a single gear masticating juicer……..
How did I get here?
Morgan’s birth was a turning point in my life. After experiencing the typical hospital birth–epidural, pitocin, continuous fetal monitoring (both external and internal), episiotomy, impending C-section and then watching the medical team as they resucitated my daughter, I woke up.
I no longer wanted to continue living the way I was: very little activity, following a “typical” diet and trusting that there’ll always be some medicine for me to take, when I become ill. Wanting to take more control and responsibility of my lifestyle choices, I began to research fitness and nutrition and teamed up with my friend, Giovanni, a natural health fanatic. Together, we designed a program for me which included eating “real” whole foods and discovering a physical activity I really did enjoy that I could do consistently.
Since Morgan’s birth, I’ve lost a total of 70 pounds (as well as had two more babies with labors that were totally unmedicated, doula assisted, and both came out screaming and rooting.) Not only was I healthier and in better shape, I was also more aware of labor interventions and decided to be more in control of my birth choices.
Before I go any further, please know that I’m not against medicine, when needed. I’ve had thyroid disease for about 19 years and don’t dare miss a dose. And if you chose to have an epidural for your births, I won’t disown you. Every woman is different and needs to make the decision right for her. If I ever find out I’m having twins, I’ve already decided that I’m going to have to be knocked out, as the idea causes anxiety just to think about it. (I lost my twin a couple of days after birth and have been told that this type of anxiety is normal when the surviving twin gives birth to twins.)
So I learned the importance of good nutrition as it pertains to wellness. My hope is to make the best choices I can so that I may take the best care possible of my family. I’ll also be studying fitness, too, which is a plus!
