We only have two weeks left of our “seat work.” This is exciting!
After we complete the rest of the text books we’ll spend the remainder of our time reading “Living Books” that we have set aside for Kindergarten.
We should have the results of Morgan’s tests by May 1st (which happens to be her 6th birthday)and plan to begin 1st grade in May or June.
We have most of our first grade materials but still need to pick up our 1st grade readers and read alouds (more Living Books)and first grade science. Our Homeschool Convention is coming up in a few weeks, so I’ll purchase everything then.
Also, Jared will start K4 this year! I can’t believe my baby boy will be in Kindergarten next year. Elena will be moving into K3, which means she joins us for the lessons but may do a craft which is on her level.
Our family started off with the Charlotte Mason style of homeschooling but have become more eclectic over the past couple of years. This means that I pull from a variety of different methods to create a personalized program for the kids. Regarding math, I prefer a traditional approach, social studies and history are learned through Living Books, science is taught through unit studies with hands on application, handwriting and reading are taught through a combination of Charlotte Mason and Traditional methods.
When we first started, I tried the traditional method but was getting burned out. I switched over to an entirely CM approach but found that we needed a bit more structure, so I pulled from three different curricula My Father’s World , which was created by a Speech-Language Pathologist, Christian Light Education , which is a Mennonite curriculum and I love the simplicity and fluff-free textbooks. I also love the stories which are based in the country and on simple living, and my all time favorite Sonlight. I love this program because when followed throughout high school the student will read virtually every classic available. And it builds a decent library as well!
