It’s safe to say that we all experience too much stress. It is an unfortunate fact of life. However, too much stress can really take its toll on your life and your happiness. Stress is not designated only for individuals. Families can also feel the stress and it can impact your relationships, as well as how you interact with one another as a family unit.
6 Warning Signs Your Family is Under Too Much Stress
If you see the signs that your family is under too much stress, or that you’re not handling the stress you’re facing very well, then you need to intervene before it damages the family relationships. Here are six warning signs your family is under too much stress.
You yell a lot.
Sadly, most families have moments where they yell but if you’re yelling at each other all the time, this is a bad sign. The more you yell, or the more others in your family are yelling, the more stress is taking its toll on you. It’s time to stop, regroup, and do something about it.
Call a family meeting and talk about it. Then, come up with different ways to communicate with one another.
You’re not eating as a family.
When you skip family dinners, or when people are fighting during family dinners, this is a good sign that stress is running high. Consider starting a new tradition where (1) you eat together as a family, and (2) you all talk about something good and positive that has happened to you during that day.
You are not sleeping well.
If some, or all, of your family members are not sleeping well at night, this is a sign of stress rearing its ugly head. Lack of sleep increases your amount of it, creating a cycle that is hard to break. Make sure everyone has been able to de-escalate before lying down for the night.
You get sick a lot.
If you or your children keep getting every little bug that’s going around and constantly feel tired and run down, it’s probably stress. Scientifically, this has been known to aid in suppressing the immune system. When you’re stressed and your immune system is weakened, it opens the door to being sicker.
You’re always on the go.
It’s nice to have activities and other responsibilities but when you feel like your family practically lives out of the minivan, that can put you under lots of stress. People of all ages need time to just relax and hang out in the comfort of their own homes. Make you’re planning downtime for everyone in the family, including yourself.
There is a lot of crying.
If there’s a lot of crying happening with family members of all ages, and if you feel like crying often yourself, it’s probably stress. Emotional signs of stress include frequent crying, difficulty concentrating, mood swings, among other things.
Try to alleviate circumstances and situations that would cause these emotions to flare up out of control. Have moments where you’re doing things that everyone enjoys.
Final Thoughts
Now that you are aware of these signs, do you see them in your own family? Have you seen them before? Next time you start to see any of these signs creep up on you, you’ll be aware and there is something you can do about it. Stop the stress now and manage the way your family deals with it before it gets the best of you and your loved ones.
