Perhaps it’s from all those years of ballet, but I frequently pull my left hip out of place.
I had my first bout in college. After an exam and x-rays, my doctor prescribed anti-inflammatories, which I took every day for about four months.
When my oldest daughter was 9 months old, I yanked that hip out again while playing with her. Dreading those months upon months of drugs and pain, I called up a massage therapist friend, hoping to get some therapy started. She said, “Sweetie, massage is great, but I think you need a chiropractor.”
Not only had I never been to a chiropractor but I’d heard they were psychos, eager to mess with my beloved and extremely important spine. I wasn’t going to follow all those ignorant folks who loved their chiropractors so much that they couldn’t help but visit at least once a month, if not multiple times a week!
But the pain was great, so I found a sitter and put down the $30 to see if it’d help.
Honestly, I screamed during the adjustment, and in fact was in *more* pain. I wasn’t happy with my friend, who denied my massage and advised my torture.
I let her know that, too.
A few hours later, I felt better but stiff and still sore, so my baby and I settled down for a nap. That evening I felt fine. No more pain, walking completely upright, and without a single dose of anti-inflammatories.
So, after weighing months of pain and hundreds of dollars in drugs, against $30, a 5 minute visit to the chiropractor, no pain meds, and one day of resting, I knew what my future treatments would be.
And our visits to the chiropractor have continued. Later I even discovered Upper Cervical chiropractic, which is very specialized and ultra-gentle.
During my last three pregnancies, I received chiropractic care on a regular basis and found it a tremendous benefit.
Is chiropractic care appropriate for every ache and pain? Certainly not. If you decide to seek out chiropractic care, a good one should refer you to the appropriate individual, if he or she feels your condition is beyond their scope of care.
How do you incorporate chiropractic care in your life? Do you use it for aches and pains? Or do you see chiropractic care as part of an integral part of your family’s overall well-being? I’d love to read about your experiences!

I go monthly for ‘regular health’. I never really have aches or pains.
When pregnant I go twice a month and weekly the last month of pregnancy. Really good for opening the pelvis for the baby to come out 😉
A Mama's Story says
Katie, that’s pretty much what I did when I was pregnant–I went every other week and then weekly during the last month. It helped so much! Thanks for sharing your experience. 🙂

We use our chiropractor for aches and pains and for “health”. When my son starts feeling congested, we take him for that. I’ve seen a huge improvement since starting! We love our chiropractor!
A Mama's Story says
Erika, I know several folks who say their allergies and sinus troubles improved after starting chiropractic care. Thanks for visiting and for your input.

30 bucks?!?! Good grief, I’d go every week if it was that cheap! DO NOT take that for granted. That is super cheap for a good Chiro!
A Mama's Story says
Ginger, so true!!! I’ve met some chiropractors who charge $75 or more, and only a little less for the children. I’ve found one in our area which is in network, so that helps, as well. 🙂

I love my chiro! I started going in due to back pain, neck pain, and headaches. Shortly after beginning treatment, all that was gone…I’m so glad I went! I don’t get headaches anymore (except stress related during a few huge life occurrences). It’s amazing how much chiropractic care can do! It reduces inflammation which is the cause of all diseases (that aren’t genetic). Chiropractors can help with all sicknesses!
My chiro specializes in maternity care, so I know I’ll be seeing her a lot when I get pregnant 🙂
A Mama's Story says
Thanks for visiting, Veronica! Finding a chiro who specializes in maternity care is great!!!
It’s encouraging to read all the positive feedback!

I don’t usually go to a chiropractor…but my husband may start seeing one!

That’s good news, Sarah! Your therapist friend was more like an angel in disguise by advising you to see a chiropractor. Hehe. Chiropractic treatment has been supported by the WHO (World Health Organization) to treat various health illnesses including aches and pains. Additionally, the benefits of this treatment during pregnancy include eliminating nausea, and back and neck pain relief. Pregnant women will have smoother labor and delivery if they decide to go through chiropractic treatment.

That’s good news, Sarah. I am also a chiropractic care adherent and I am glad that it did many great things for you and for your health. Stress and overexertion can really cause severe body pain and sometimes, displacement of the spinal column which causes exasperation and irritation. Chiropractic care can relieve much of the stress that we are put under and allow us to operate efficiently and much more comfortably.

Even though you had doubts taking chiropractic care at first, it’s still good that you decided to try it for yourself. Just look at what happened! It turned out to be even more helpful than all the traditional medications that really cost you a lot! And for me, I take chiropractic care to help my body stay fit and healthy.
