Another from the vault. I wanted to show pics of an herbal first-aid salve I made a couple of years ago to show how simple and easy they are. π
The herbs included 1 ounce each:
- St. Johns Wort
- Calendula
- Plantain
- Comfrey
To make the salve I used the herbs, olive oil, and beeswax. I added Lavender essential oil before it cooled, so it smells lovely.
I’ve kept a jar in the bathroom, diaper bag, my purse, etc. and have used it on scrapes, rashes, nicks, mosquito bites, etc.
Olive oil in the double boiler:
The herbs are in: Calendula, St. Johns Wort, Plantain, and Comfrey:
After about an hour, the herbs are ready:
Straining the herb infused oil through some cheesecloth:
Squeezing out the last little bit:
Melting the beeswax.
Mixing the infused oil into the beeswax:
Getting ready to pour the mixture into my jars and canisters:
Poured the mixture in and getting ready to add some Lavender oil
The mixture will cool quickly, so be sure to add drops fast.
All done! Once cooled, the salve became a lovely green color.

Thank you so much for this recipe! I’ve been looking for a first aid salve recipe so I can get away from commercial ointments. Would you consider adding this post to my blog’s new link-up? It’d be a great addition! https://littlefarminthebigcity.blogspot.com/2012/04/homestead-helps-wednesday-homestead-hop_11.html

Hannah, once you start to make these homemade, it’s really hard to buy a typical one in the store. π

Hi, is this salve safe to use on the lips as well? Thanks.

We’ve used it on chapped lips, but use it sparingly.
