On a quest for healthy meals that are easily prepared, I started working through a few cookbooks. Here are my favorites.
From the Kitchen of Two Sisters: A Satisfying, New Approach to Slimness, Vitality, and Health by Danielle and Lindsay Voeller: Recipes call for rice milk, spelt flour, Bragg’s, flax seed mixture (in lieu of eggs), and natural sugars in their recipes, so this is very much open and go, with no need to hunt down a substitution! I also own the DVD, which offers cooking and nutrition tips presented in a way anyone can understand. For my daughter’s 7th birthday, I made the carrot cake and the children enjoyed it!
Over the years, I’ve used the cookie recipes for travel, as the ingredients are wholesome enough to provide a healthy snack or light meal and are conveniently portable when on the road.
My other favorite is Whole Foods for Babies and Toddlers. This book not only answers questions regarding nutrition for babies and toddlers, but offers easy, everyday, “real-life” recipes. I made another child’s first birthday cake using a recipe from this book.
As for older children, my all-time favorite cookbook is Whole Foods for Kids to Cook–another “real life,” cookbook. And yes, children can do a lot of the work themselves. Several of the recipes are appropriate for family mealtime, too!
Here’s a picture of some of the carob and almond banana chunks we made.It didn’t take long before they were gone!

I have been wondering about that two sisters cookbook for years…wondering if we should try it. It sounds great!
We love the LLL “Whole Foods for the Whole Family” cookbook–we’ve been using it for about 12 years. We also have the LLL children’s cookbook you mentioned, and really like it.
My absolute favorite cookbooks are Sue Gregg’s. We invested in them over 10 years ago, and it has been an investment that has really paid off many times over.

Thanks for posting on these. I’m going to have to look into them. Do they taste a lot different than their not-so-healthy counterparts?
I hate to say it, but we have a houseful of junk food lovers…or junky snackers anyway. Would love to get more on track, but I don’t know if taking away sweets…and esp. chocolate would be a recipe for a very good marriage here =)

Rachel, I’ve liked most everything we’ve made in these cookbooks. So far, so good. 🙂
The banana chunks were fantastic!

I’m actually planning to post a few of my favorite recipes from Sue’s cookbooks in the next few days. I already have them typed up–just need to post them. 🙂
And thank you so much for your sweet comment about my blog! I have really enjoyed your blog, too. We seem to have a lot in common!
