I’m so excited to share this post from my friend Katie of Simple Foody! If you’re looking for great info on real food, you simply must visit her blog and follow her on FB and Twitter!
Have you heard of the term GMO? GMO is an acronym for genetically modified organism, and it could be lurking in your food. You may be thinking, ‘sigh-it’s another crazy lady who is going to condemn my corn flakes’…hear me out.
Definition of GMOS: Genetically modified organism (GMO) or genetically engineered organism (GEO) is an organism whose genetic material has been altered using genetic engineering techniques. GMOS are the constituents of genetically modified foods. A genetically modified food is a plant or meat product that has had its DNA artifically altered in a laboratory by genes from other plants, animals, viruses or bacteria, in order to produce foreign compounds in that food. This type of genetic alteration is not found in nature, and is experimental. ~ Source
Negative Effects of GMOS:
- Lowers fertility and in some studies mice were completely infertile within 3 generations.
- Increased allergies and allergic responses.
- Linked to cancer and tumors…just to name a few, this list could be pages long.
Have you ever thought what the Bible may have to say about what we eat? God’s Word is the key to live, and covers everything we need to know on how to live, and it isn’t silent on the topic of food or GMOS.
Let’s start at the beginning…
Then God said, “Let the earth bring forth grass, the herb that yields seed, and the fruit tree that yields fruit according to it’s kind, whose seed is in itself, on the earth”; and it was so. And the earth brought forth grass, the herb that yields seed according to its kind, and the tree that yields seed according to its kind, and the tree that yields seed according to its kind, and the tree that yields fruit, whose seed is in itself according to its kind. And God saw that it was good. ~ Genesis 1:11-12 [emphasis mine]
The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines species as: kind, sort. God created all herbs, fruits, and vegetables, and they produce fruit after their kind. Corn pollinates with other corn and produces corn. But GMO scientist take seeds and splice the DNA and inject animal, bacteria, or virus DNA into it. That is not what God created seeds to do. Pigs mate with other pigs and we get baby pigs, but now we are mating seeds and pig DNA…and it isn’t looking good for anyone.
You shall keep My statutes. You shall not let your livestock breed with another kind. You shall not sow your field with mixed seed. Nor shall a garment of mixed linen and wool come upon you. ~ Leviticus 19:19
The scripture is clear that we should not be mixing kinds or species. So what can you do?
Pray about it as a family and ask God to lead you.
Learn what crops are grown as GMOs.
Some of the major GMO crops are: Soy, Corn, Canola (also known as rape seed/rape seed oil), Cotton, and Sugar Beets…see link above for a more detailed list.
Look for the NON-GMO label, or buy organic.
Grow your own food from organic or heirloom seeds.
Be careful not to let it consume your thoughts and become an idol. God gives each of us a budget to work within and we should do the best we can with what He has provided for us. He will meet our needs. After all, He is the only author of life and gives and takes away as He sees fit.
So you shall serve the LORD your God, and He will bless your bread and your water, and I will take sickness away from the midst of you. No one shall suffer miscarriage or be barren in your land; I will fulfill the number of your days. ~Exodus 23:25-26

Excellent! The more we share about GMOs the more people are going to take notice and the more we will make a dent in the problem!
The Mama Behind the Story says
Absolutely, NautralMom! 🙂 GMOs frighten me. Thanks for visiting and be sure to check out Katie’s blog. 🙂
Becki says
My 2 year old is allergic to corn and corn derivatives in small amounts – however we bought some non-gmo corn this summer and he had NO reaction!
The Mama Behind the Story says
That’s amazing, Becki!!! 🙂
Katie @SimpleFoody says
Becki, there are several other people just like your son. Some can eat regular corn (non-gmo) but when they consume gmo corn the have a reaction. One woman even stopped breathing!
The Mama Behind the Story says
Wow, Katie, that’s fascinating! I’ve been doing some reading lately about how folks who are normally unable to tolerate gluten are able to eat homemade bread with a natural starter and with natural yeast (vs. baker’s yeast).
JES says
Love the closing Scripture, perfect! Also, a question… If an item is labelled organic, then it is absolutely NOT a GMO product? Thanks for your help…
The Mama Behind the Story says
JES, unless something has changed, Organic means non-GMO, however, organic doesn’t always equal healthy. 🙂 I’ve seen some organic items with ingredients that aren’t good for us.
The Mama Behind the Story says
JES, better yet, take a look at this: https://www.organic.org/home/faq

Thanks for your help 🙂

JES, yes. Or better yet NON GMO verified foods (you’ll see their label on products). Each of those products are actually tested for GMO’s. Organic products are not tested for GMO’s (at least that I know of), but the farmer does have to prove he is using organic seeds, practices etc. But because of cross contamination (through wind/cross pollination) I’m not sure you can get a 100% guarantee unless the finished product is being tested.
