I enjoy my daily Quiet Time and love to add a short devotional to give me a nice nugget of truth to ponder as I go about my day. When I saw a review copy of Sweet & Simple Moments with God Devotional by Kim Newlen, being offered for Tyndale bloggers, I thought a change of pace from my usual review selections would be nice.
Having used this devotional for several months, I feel I have a good grasp on what it offers to readers.
True to its title, this devotional is “sweet & simple.” It’s not one I’d reach for if looking for an in-depth study or even for a lot of meat, but it’s very good as an add-on or during busy days, such as when mothering a newborn.
As part of the “One Year” collection, this author has written a devotional for every day of the year. Each day’s devotion begins with a Scripture and a message that reads as though I’m sitting across from a best friend sharing her heart for Jesus and inviting me to search my own heart, reflecting on what God is teaching me. At the end of each devotion is a key symbol next to an easy and doable assignment, such as using Google to go deeper into a topic, to pray about something specific, or to carry a specific thought throughout the day.
Devotionals include personal stories from the author’s life, personal thoughts, and even a glimpse directly into her family, such as sharing a note she wrote for her daughter and her daughter’s reply. She openly admits her faults and how Jesus is the over-comer.
While I don’t see this devotional as a stand-alone, it would be a great gift for a new mom or to any woman needing a quick pick-me-up or inspirational thought during her day. The author states that she wrote this devotional to help women make daily time with God a part of their usual routine and encourages them to read their Bible alongside it. Her heart to reach women is reflected throughout, and I can see this book as being something to enjoy beyond a one year journey.
