There’s absolutely nothing like welcoming a new soul into the world. I love using herbs and oils in my home, and especially these essential oils for new moms.
The early days are tiring yet so blessed, and admittedly, I tend to struggle during those first few weeks. I’m sure I don’t help myself much by doing too much too soon.
After my 6th baby’s birth, I experienced a tremendous amount of stress and emotions as my body healed, and I found these essential oils very helpful. Also, 3 of these oils are included in the updated Everyday Oils collection, which is part of the Premium Starter Kit.
Joy:
There’s nothing quite like this blend. I’ve diffused it at home and even at a couple of events; it never fails to draw in some visitors. With its uplifting fragrance, it helped give me a boost when I was feeling weepy or emotional. In Debra Raybern’s book, Gentle Babies, she lists Joy as an oil to help encourage let-down by helping a mom to relax, if her stress level is affecting milk supply. I always diffused Joy or used it via inhalation, but some women may dilute and apply it topically.

***Because of some of the citrus oils in Joy, avoid exposure to direct sunlight up to 12 hours after using.
Peace and Calming (with or without Frankincense):
On the opposite end of the spectrum, some moments my emotions seemed to swing to anxiety and feeling nervous. This was especially troubling in the evenings, when I needed to rest. Every night, I diffused Peace and Calming and when I really felt that my mind and emotions wouldn’t settle down, I added in a couple of drops of Frankincense to give it a boost.
**Frankincense is part of the Premium Starter Kit.
Another alternative to Peace and Calming is
Stress Away
: I carry the Stress Away roll-on in my bag. I have 2 bottles–one for home and one for travel. Stress Away is also available in a regular essential oil bottle and can be diffused.
**Stress Away is now part of the Premium Starter Kit.
Lavender:
Lavender oil is a versatile oil that helps to calm moods, uplift spirits, and is also antiseptic and antimicrobial. Diffusing lavender may help a new mom relax and unwind while also keeping her environment free from the ickies.

Fennel Oil:
While I struggle through the hormonal ups and downs during the postpartum weeks, one thing my body does well is lactate! I have no problems making milk, as long as my thyroid gets under control. If my levels remain too high and aren’t corrected early enough, my milk supply won’t recover. Now we know that as soon as I feel the symptoms of hyperthyroidism, I ask my providers to check my levels.
When I felt a slight drop in supply this time, I applied 1 drop of diluted fennel oil onto each breast and by that evening, there was milk! I thought this was remarkable, especially since my supply seems lowest during the evenings.
**According to the Reference Guide for Essential Oils, Fennel oil shouldn’t be used for more than 10 days and continued use could lead to contact sensitization. Caution should also be used in those susceptible to epilepsy or who are pregnant.
