Some have asked what the rest of our day is like, if we’re done with school by noon. Do the kids just play?
The kids definitely get in some play time throughout the day and we also have a family “quiet time,” in which everyone goes into their room or finds a quiet place. My four-year-old usually takes a nap, the five-year-old will look at books, and my oldest either watches Between the Lions, looks at a book, or helps me out around the house.
When I say we’re done with “school,” what I should’ve said was that we’re done with “seat work.” We’re still learning throughout the day though. I guess one way of looking at it is we do the “theory” in the morning and then “application” in the afternoon. Worksheets, workbooks, crafts, posters, flash cards, copy work, music, etc. are covered in the morning, but then we use the skills we’re learning while we do laundry, bake, cook, read “living books,” grocery shop/find and clip coupons, enjoy nature studies, take note of the world around us while commuting, become sensitive to those who are sometimes overlooked (special needs, the elderly, orphans, widows, etc.), tend to our home so that we may create a haven for the family, and learn other skills that I hope my children will take with them through life. It’s our sincere hope that our children will grow to seek God’s Will for their lives and honor Him with the choices they make.
So, obviously we do a LOT more with “school,” than it sounds. We diligently strive to ensure our children receive the very best education we can provide them–we don’t take any of this for granted, but we also want them to leave home knowing how to care for their families, and every day we realize just how little time we have to train them up.
