I struggle with weight. Or rather I struggle with overeating. I can blame my thyroid all I want, but truth be told, I’m a stress eater. After a rough day, Krispy Kreme beckons me!
There. I admit my weakness.
While I’ve lost a large amount of weight (as much as 70 pounds) three times in my life, I’ve been able to keep the weight off for three years. (Yay!)
After the first couple of attempts, I noticed the biggest success came when I changed my thinking from “diet and exercise” to “nutrition and fitness.” I also started to look at my lifestyle from a wellness perspective rather than a temporary fix to look better in my clothes.
In her awesome new e-book, 100 Pound Loser, Jessica Heights shares her journey of taking control of her weight and getting healthy! Reading her story reminded me of my own life and validated many of the thoughts and conclusions I’ve come to. I knew her suggestions were solid, because the same ideas led to lasting weight loss for myself as well.
While she covers the practical nuts and bolts–exercise, food, and fitting it all in while mothering lots of littles (she has four children, all just over a year apart in age), she also touches on deeper emotions, personal struggles, and even the spiritual side of getting and staying healthy!
After being “blogging friends” for a few months, I finally met the delightful Jessica at Allume in October. I thought she looked slim and healthy for someone who had given birth to four children so close in age. I assumed she must have an amazing lightning fast metabolism and even envied her as I pondered my own struggle with knowing when to put down the doughnut and working to keep my weight in check.
Reading her story inspired me as I realized that she’s a mama facing many of the same hurdles I do and can relate to many other women who feel they’re alone.
In a society in which staying slim and trim can border on vanity and self-absorption, she reaches further and explains how in keeping fit, we’re also being good stewards of our “temple.” There’s good stuff in this part of the book and I simply can’t do it justice, but here’s a quote which spoke loud and clear to me:
Will we teach them with our words and actions that conformity to contemporary beauty standards is deceptive and a stick-thin figure is fleeting, but a girl or woman who fears the Lord is to be praised?
In addition to advice on food, fitness, and faith, she covers self-image, overcoming plateaus, handling cravings, setting realistic goals and rewards for reaching them. Her inspirational before and after pictures and Q&A, polished off with her personable chatting-with-a-girlfriend tone, completes this refreshing, non-intimidating read, making it worth every penny.
If you’re looking for a resource to help jump start your journey toward health or just want some encouragement along the way, this is a treasure trove of wisdom and advice!

What a great review! I never used to have a problem with my weight until I was pregnant with my first baby…then I really took the idea of eating for two to heart…and hips 🙂 Now after two babies, I am still trying to get back on track. I like what you said about changing your thinking from dieting and exercise to nutrition and fitness! What a great idea!
I read this review last week and went and bought the book. I LOVED it! Thank you for sharing your thoughts on it, friend!
