This post is an excerpt from my chapter Homeschooling a Child on the Autism Spectrum, from the upcoming e-book, Homeschooling Day by Day.
I understand the uncertainty of taking on the responsibility of your child’s education, especially when they have special needs. The day I signed the form to release the school system of their responsibility in educating my child was both liberating and nerve-wracking.
I somehow allowed myself to believe that my son would always have learning challenges and might not ever excel in school. And so I tried to push him into where I thought he should be. I was so focused on getting him on grade level, that at one point, I decided that he would use grade-level material sink or swim! It didn’t take long for his confidence to plummet.
