I strived to have the toys put away, a hot meal on the table, and everything as organized as possible to welcome my husband home at the end of his work day. But he always seemed stressed, overwhelmed, and like he wanted to climb the door jamb each time the children ran to joyfully greet him.
At first I was confused–wasn’t I doing everything right? Didn’t all dads want to be knocked over by their children the moment they came home?
I even started to wonder if he liked being around us.
I began to examine my husband’s schedule. Being self-employed, there are no 9 to 5 hours–his cell phone is always on and clients call him at all hours. That’s not an exaggeration. I knew he started his day during the early morning hours, but it wasn’t until being up with a child and hearing his phone ring at 1:30am I realized he was frequently being bombarded by people needing his attention.
