How To Save Money on Christmas Gifts for the Kids
1. Get an Older Model
It’s likely that something on your child’s wish list is a new version of something that existed last year. To save money on Christmas gifts this year, consider buying last year’s version of a toy or electronic. Just make sure that what they’re most interested in isn’t one of the newest features of the toy. If it isn’t, then you should be safe.
2. DIY Some Gifts
Do you have DIY skills? If you know how to sew, you could make a cool shirt, or sew a stuffed animal. If you crochet, you could make a fashionable scarf. If your kids love to read, make a couple of homemade cloth bookmarks. If they like to collect figurines, maybe you know how to make one out of clay or wood. And if you’re a painter, why not make a custom piece for your child’s room? Utilizing your creative skills can be a great way to make your kids thoughtful gifts, and save money at the same time.
3. Don’t Wait Too Long
If you wait until the last minute to get your kids’ gifts, you’re not going to have enough time to shop around, and low store quantities may force you to buy toys at full price. If you shop online at the last minute, you may have to pay for pricey expedited shipping, and you’ll miss the chance to watch for special coupons or flash deals.
4. Buy Used
Used things aren’t bad things! If your kid loves books, they’d probably rather have 10 used books than just 5 new books! I’ve found great buys on almost new toys in great condition on e-bay or consignment shops. Make sure to shop smart. Don’t buy toys that will break down easily, and if you’re buying online, read the details to find out just how heavily used the item is.
It’s likely that you know other parents who have kids that are around the same age as yours. Why not arrange a toy swap with them? Your kids’ old toys may become another child’s new favorites! You’ll help keep your toys current for your child’s development stage.
6. Use Coupons
If you’re planning to save money on Christmas gifts for the kids, then you’ll want to use coupons. There are coupons available for all sorts of toys! You can get the coupons in your mail, in the newspaper, in-store circulars, or online on sites like RetailMeNot. Clipping coupons only takes a bit of time, and can save you money on gifts for your kids!
