If you look below, you’ll see a new ticker on the site. π I set a goal to walk 60-100 miles a month. This is a combo of walking outside (I have 1 and 2 miles mapped off around my neighborhood), walking DVD’s, and a benefit to living in a small country place is that I can walk to the local grocery store, Jared’s therapy, hair salon, video store, etc. In other words, I’m doing a LOT of walking. I started off with a higher goal of 125 miles, but this one is just more realistic. So far, I’m in over 55 miles this month and that’s while being sick for a week. I’m close to my 60 mile goal and while I may not make it to 100, I’m still ecstatic for doing the 60! Just thirty minutes of good structured exercise (keeping your heart rate in the correct zone) is excellent for maintaining good health. π
Intro to Bulk Cooking
E-mails asking about bulk cooking have been rolling in!
I would love to post some pictures of our family preparing some of our freezer meals. I need to get the camera out and start capturing the moments!
My experience with bulk cooking started with Homemade Gourmet. They used to have a 30 day cooking manual which was fantastic. I used it so much that I had to buy a 2nd copy. Unfortunately, HG no longer sells this item but every now and then I’ll find a copy on e-bay.
HG has a new product called 4 Meals In 4 Minutes, which introduces folks to bulk cooking/freezer cooking.
Then I discovered the 30 Day Gourmet, which is also fantastic.
I buy my meat in bulk at a local Natural foods store. I’m very picky about meats and strive to use all organic. I was happy to learn that it was actually less expensive to purchase the organic meats than it was to buy from the mainstream stores. I then spend a day on preparing meats, another day for desserts, one for baking breads–both dinner and sweet breads, and a bunch of food preparation and gallon size ziplock bags later, I have 16-32 entrees in the freezer. I also keep an inventory list of what’s in the freezer and plan my menus around this.
For Monday shoppping trips, I pick up vegetables, fruits, salads, and lunch stuff for the week as my entrees are already taken care of.
I’ll plan my September cooking soon, and I’ll try to get in some pictures of the process. It’s not as daunting as it sounds but it does require some time commitment. On my cooking days, I have to set aside at least 3 hours or more but it is worth it!
