I am the research queen. If something is going wrong, if I need a solution, or if I’m pondering an idea, I look it up. I will even look up things that are going well in hopes to make them even better. I know, I have issues.
My homeschooling journey has been no exception. Due to my lack of organization skills, I tend to overcompensate. My research tendencies have had me on a spinning wheel with a plethora of amazing and resourceful information. You should see my type B self! I have sticky notes from one end of the counter top to the other, full of secrets and tips to enrich our school here at home. I have everything from curriculums, schedules, subjects, book lists, extracurricular activities, as well as making sure we get time to play outside. It’s enough to worry someone to death.
In my quest for greatness the Lord pressed on my heart some areas that have been missing throughout this planning process that are pertinent. This is what I have come to believe is the top tip… the priority… the secret… whatever you want to call it.
That is to delight, to take pleasure in, to find enjoyment, and have a deep sense of pleasure.
How often are we simply going through the motions, scanning our to-do list, making mental check marks; but aren’t present in the moments of our schooling? I have found that this secret tip can make all the difference. This can help us see past the drudgery when the excitement wears off and instead can give us a steady delight and fulfillment of the direction we are leading our children. When we can delight in them and find that true joy, no curriculum can compare.
I’ll be honest. There are days that the joy doesn’t come so easy. That my friends, is where God’s grace abounds. When I call on Him in my weakness it is truly amazing what we accomplish in our homeschool day. No, my planner may not be checked off. My children will have learned more from a pleasant momma than one who accomplished what was on paper but failed to capture her children’s hearts.
It’s a tough lesson but it is meant for our benefit, to draw us closer to one another, and make the moments count. True joy is so contagious that our children could be taught with nothing more than a stick, sand, and a library card. The bells and whistles are nothing without a mamma’s tender smile and sincerity.
What are some ways you have found joy when the luster is gone? Have you ever had to fake it till you make it? I believe God sees our efforts and that it counts!!
