When it comes to groceries, the more you buy, the better the price. One problem I have discovered with buying in bulk, though, is that I tend to go through items more quickly than I would otherwise. It’s simple economics: the more you have, the more you use; the less you have, the less you use.
Here’s an example: typically I buy a 1-lb jar of regular honey (as well as a 1-lb jar of raw honey) to last a month. Recently, I decided to buy a 3-lb container of honey, since it was significantly cheaper per pound than buying the pounds individually. Can you believe we went through the 3-lb container in a month? I haven’t bought that size of a honey jar since because I’ve been reticent to waste it again.

Recently, though, I think I’ve hit upon a practical solution. In order to use only what is really needed in a given time span (for me, a month works best since I shop on a monthly basis), the bulk food gets divided up into usable portions. So instead of just leaving that 3-lb. jar of honey in the cupboard as is, it will be divided into 3 separate jars. One jar will stay in the cupboard to be used, and when it’s done, it’s done until the next month rolls around. The extra jars will hide in the pantry until it’s time to use them.
The same principle can be applied to any manner of food bought in large amounts: grains, sugars, maple syrup, coconut oil, etc. etc. If you can get the best price in bulk, then buy in bulk! Just make sure you divvy up the large amount into smaller usable amounts so that you don’t go through it more quickly than you would otherwise.
If you are looking for more ways to save money on your grocery budget, I’ve written an eBook you’ll really want to read! It’s called “Your Grocery Budget Toolbox” and it’s full of money saving strategies that will help you get the most bang for your buck when it comes to feeding your family. If you’re wary of eBooks like this, thinking it will be full of advice on extreme couponing and stockpiling junky foods, no worries! Your Grocery Budget Toolbox is all about affording the best and healthiest food at the best prices.
A Mama’s Story readers can get 25% off the book for one week by using the code “story”. That makes it only $6... less than that 3-lb jar of honey I bought! It’s an investment you’ll want to make as you endeavor to feed your family well on less.
