Are you looking for encouragement in your role as a mom?
When I first became a Mama, I immediately searched out local support groups–groups varying in ages, goals, and family dynamics.
But there was always one underlying thought which united them–our children, though we love them, are nuisances. They get in our way and keep us from having the enjoyment we once knew. Jokes {half truth; half sarcasm} abounded in a type of competition of which mama had the most annoying child. In a word, they were desperate.
It didn’t take long for the mentality to spread. It took a little longer for the mentality to break.
So now, I’m very careful about the books I read on motherhood and the groups in which I participate. I only recommend those I feel are edifying and encourage mamas to embrace their calling of Motherhood.
And this book, Desperate, Hope for the Mom Who Needs to Breathe by Sarah Mae and Sally Clarkson, makes my list!
Admittedly, I was a little nervous after reading the title of this book. Was it going to be like the others? Would I again gather the mentality that “this is the hardest part of your life, just survive it the best you can–you’ll get your life back soon enough”?
I had faith though, since I was already familiar with Sally Clarkson. I’d spent many a late night reading her words of encouragement while tending to a Nursling. And I was able to meet both Sally and Sarah Mae at the most recent Allume conference.
The heart these dear ladies have for mamas is evident. When I had the chance to meet Sally in person, I was a little nervous to approach her, as I wondered if she felt overwhelmed by being greeted by all the other women who admired her words. But what I found was a genuine lady who wanted to let us know there’s purpose in motherhood.
When I had a chance to visit with Sarah Mae, who was busily tending to the needs of 400+ conference attendees, I met a down-to-earth mama, who loves her children and who is trying to be real with other women.
In the book, I love how Sarah Mae writes what’s on her heart–she shares notes she sent to Sally, writing about her struggles with depression and concerns over doing this mothering thing correctly (don’t we all wonder that at times?) And reading Sally’s words of warmth and real-life advice are like having my own mentor-mom.
I could hear the voices of these women so well that I read the book in two days. It was as though I was sitting with a couple of friends as they shared struggles and explained how to thrive {not just survive} as a mama.
I love the fresh approach of this book. This is real encouragement!
The book also includes a Foreword by Ann Voskamp (another dear soul I met at Allume) as well as questions not only to guide you through the book but you can even use this as a group study.
So if you’re feeling desperate as a mama and want some perspective, pick up a copy for yourself. You can read more here:
