We often talk about the importance of mamas and as we approach Father’s Day, I want to take a moment to say how much I appreciate my Dad. When I was a child, I didn’t fully understand the lengths he went to in order to be an active part of my life. As a grownup and mother to my own children, I’m able to look back and see how blessed I was.
I also think of my husband, who was only three when his father passed away. Even without a major father-figure, he’s worked hard to be a dad who is present and is completely sold-out to the well-being of his family.
A couple of years ago, my sisters and I celebrated Dad’s 60th birthday by telling him why we’re glad he’s here.
Here are a few of my reasons why I’m thankful for my dad.
- You taught me how to tie my shoes, and then took my little hand and walked with me.
- You taught me how to ride a bike, and then broke out the band aids when I skinned my knee.
- You taught me how to like lima beans, or at least how to make it look like I liked them. And now, finally, thanks to you, I really do like them…no really I do.
- You took time on the weekends for family activities, and I caught the whole family thing, six children and counting.
- You told me that some people may need 15 minutes longer to run a race, but that they still reach the finish line. I often wondered if the saying applies to a 100 meter sprint. But I got it, you believed in me, and every day I flourish and succeed, that’s me winning another race with you cheering at the side line.
- You told me that I could succeed, and every time I do, it’s your voice that rings in my ears.
- You came to watch me dance, sing, and when I made a mistake, found a way to make me laugh about it.
- Thank you for caring enough to invest in me from your heart.
- Thanks for helping me move, more than once. We will keep you posted on the next time, so keep your calendar clear.
- Thank you for encouraging my husband; he has a big pair of shoes to fill.
- You told me I would be a good mom. I’m still trying to be that every day, and every day I think I get a little closer.
- You are an awesome dad, and now an awesome Papa. What a hole would be in my children’s hearts and lives without you.
- You taught me how to manage the logistics of a large family. Now I’m ready for that lesson about getting the rest I need. Anytime, dad, really anytime.
- You taught me to appreciate a large family.
- You taught me regardless of circumstances–good or bad–that family is family.
What about you? How are you thankful for your dad or even for your husband this Father’s Day?
