“Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee:
because he trusteth in thee.” Isaiah 26:3
I know this is true. For many years I even claimed it as my “life verse.” Many times I have gained peace as I reflected on the truth of the promise.
But not lately.
I would love to sit here and impart some wonderful nugget of wisdom gleaned from the experience of being a full-time homeschooling mama of many, but I cannot. There is no peace in it at the moment.
You see, the promise in Isaiah is conditional. God’s perfect peace is for those whose mind is on him. I love my husband. He is a good man and a wonderful father, but my peace is not based in the relationship I have with him. My children are precious, and I adore them, but true peace does not come from the fun things we do together.
True peace comes from having my heart and mind fixed on God. There’s a t-shirt my son would like to have. It says, “If you’re too busy to hunt and fish, you’re too busy.” While that shirt is just for fun, it does make a good point. Our choices are about priorities. It could say, “If you’re too busy for God, you’re too busy.”
It’s so easy to get distracted by the events of life. It could be the children’s activities. It might be my own expectations. Maybe it’s piles of dishes or leaking washing machines or whining toddlers. It could even be church activities. As these things fill my life and take away from the time I spend with my heavenly Father, they begin to chip away at the peace that only God can give. Bitterness, or at the least, emptiness, replaces the peace that is present when God is first place.
Yes, lately I’ve been distracted and restless, but God is merciful. I might momentarily be at peace when the house is clean, the children are quiet and the calendar is cleared, but I will find true peace only when my heart and mind are again fixed solely on God.
“For ye shall go out with joy, and be led forth with peace:
the mountains and the hills shall break forth before you into singing,
and all the trees of the field shall clap their hands.” Isaiah 55:12

I have no doubt you’ll get back to this kind of peace. It is a troubling time when I’m not at peace either, so I understand. Sometimes there is so much to do and we need to let go of a few things or at least take a small step back in order to regain that peace and connection.
Here’s to you finding peace again! 🙂
