I’ve been a mama for over nine years now. Slowly, almost imperceptibly, I’ve become somewhat of a shut in. My children became my security blanket. I wasn’t secure in being just me anymore. I felt naked and exposed if I didn’t have a child to hide *just me* from the world. I’d make plans to go socialize and then find the most minute reason to cancel. I then felt as if I had space to breathe again.
I could stay home and be by myself – as much as you can with four kids. The problem was, I was lonely. I had plenty of relationships online. Real moms. Real friends. People I shared prayer requests and imperfections with – but those “in real life” tangible relationships were lacking. They were lacking because I felt exposed.
What pushed me out of my comfort zone?
I joined Thirty-One about ten months ago. One thing that I have loved about their approach is sharing your story, not selling. They are about relationships, rather than not pushing product.
Don’t get me wrong, there are plenty of women who make good money!
I’ve had to accept the slow and steady approach for me–developing IRL relationships and learning how to nourish them.
I still feel exposed. I’m still afraid. But slowly I’ve gained confidence.
I’ve had to put myself in from of others. I’ve had to be the expert. I’ve had to “just be me”.
I’m glad I’ve left my comfort zone, it’s given me more energy for life, and I don’t feel so drained.
I don’t think any study, book, or life group could’ve gotten me here. In fact, being in Thirty-One is part of what helped encourage us towards being a part of a small group at church.
And I went on to join a MOPs group. Yes, my very first day of going to MOPs the baby had an ever so slight runny nose and I almost called the whole thing off. I decided to keep her with me to err on the side of caution, but I went all the same.
Do you need to “get outside yourself”?
I’ll tell you something else. I’m not a “salesy” person. I hate “the pitch” and asking people to buy stuff.
But I think there’s something out there for everyone. You have to find what fits you. I love that with Thirty-One, you don’t have to be “green,” into make-up, DIY or even exercise – “everyone uses bags,” as one friend says.

Good on you for stepping out!! I took on Creative Memories many years ago because I had lost contact in our small community as a creative person. Before I started homeschooling I ran a craft group and attended a quilting group – this was a good balance with church commitments as well. But once more kids came along, and homeschooling some of these activities dropped by the by – and I was okay with that for the first few years, and then I needed to reconnect with the women in our town. I too took a slow and steady, not for the money approach because I had t his different goal. Not selling anything any more – but have started to go back to the quilting group. All about seasons in our life.
