As a full time satisfier of everyone else’s needs it can be easy to get frustrated and overwhelmed from the constant demands of motherhood. You feed all the hungry mouth’s and sit down to feed yourself only to be bombarded with demands of more. You finally get the baby to sleep; heaving a sigh of relief only to hear the sound of cries once again.
This job that we have been given is 24/7. It’s constant and all consuming. There is no start and stop time. We wake up and fall asleep to it. It’s a privilege and a joy; a refiner and revealer of our hearts. After my husband and I were married there was nothing that could make our joy more complete then welcoming our first child into the world. We were hopelessly wrapped around this tiny little person’s finger. He was the apple of our eye, the pride of our lives. With each new baby that God has added to our family, we once again fall head-over-heels in love. There is nothing else on earth that compares to the joy that these miniature versions of us, bring to our lives.
Along with all the joy comes a lot of responsibility, a lot of stress and a lot of worry. It’s all too easy to fall into a rut of being worn out and weary caring for the needs of those you love most. Though I am able to enjoy time by myself and have many outlets, I still find myself day dreaming about all the things I could be doing if I didn’t have so many little distractions and interruptions. I love being needed and I love my family more than anything but there are times when I believe the lies that I am missing out on something; that being just a mother isn’t enough.
I came across this quote recently that really helped me put the job I have in perspective. As mother’s we have the privilege of not only caring for the physical needs of our children but the spiritual as well. We are molding these little souls into men and woman of God. What we pour into them now will not only affect their lives here on earth but for all eternity. This is our most important work!
These lives, these little people are looking to us to meet their needs.
They come into this world totally dependent and helpless. As they grow they are gradually becoming more independent, but right now there is much to do for them. As they look to us, so should we look to our heavenly father. We are helpless without him. We need to be totally dependent on him to give us the grace and strength we need for each new day.
When feelings of frustration and insufficiency rise as I think of all I have to do, God uses my little innocent baby to help me stop and put things in perspective. He has no idea of the many things on my plate, nor does he care. All he knows is that he needs me. Everything else can wait, but he can’t. I pick him up, hold him in my arms and time slows down. His deep brown eyes look up at me with a glimmer. His mouth quirks a smile as he contentedly nurses. I squeeze his meaty leg rolls and chew on his pudgy feet as he pinches my arm and claws my face.
He stops nursing and looks up at me with milk running out of the side of his mouth and lets out a mischievous little laugh. I kiss his mouth and smell his sweet breath before he quickly gets back to business. These quiet moments may not seem important to the world but they are important to this little life, they are important to God. They give me fresh purpose and resolve to be faithful in the daily grind of motherhood.
When you become overwhelmed and disillusioned in your role, remember that there was a mother with a baby wrapped in swaddling cloths; lying in a manger. She was called to care for the King of kings, the Creator of the world who came to earth as a man…a baby. He humbled himself, gave up his rights and his life for us so that we might have life eternal. He cared so much for us that he was willing to become a helpless baby and be cared for by those he created. Jesus was the greatest gift to mankind and he has given us the gift of raising these precious babies… into men and woman of God.
