Our family has enjoyed the benefits of chiropractic care for over ten years. After we were introduced to Upper Cervical Chiropractic, I noticed an even more significant improvement in my migraines. While it was a different approach compared to what we were familiar with, my husband and I have been astounded at how well I’ve held the adjustments.
I’m excited to share this intro to Upper Cervical Chiropractic, written by Dr. Jason Blackketter from Genesis Chiropractic.

What do the following conditions have in common?
Scoliosis, Diabetes, Colic, Migraine Headaches, ADD/ADHD, Arthritis, Vertigo, Meniere’s Disease, Ear Infections (otitis media), Dysautonomia, Sciatica, Trigeminal Neuralgia, RSD (reflexive sympathetic dystrophy), Bed Wetting, Hypertension (high blood pressure), Multiple Sclerosis, Infertility, Fibromyalgia, Chronic Fatigue, and Asthma
If you are confused, keep reading…it’s simple once you understand the truth about how the body really works!
Many people have become frustrated seeking answers and trying to find some help for their medical conditions. Sadly, the diagnoses mentioned above cost families many thousands of dollars every year in therapy, medications, doctor visits, and a seemingly endless array of exams, tests, and procedures. Not to mention the time off work and eventual frustration when the answer is, “Everything looks normal. You’ll need to learn how to live with it.”
Thankfully there is a little known specialty outside of the standard medical profession that may provide some life-changing answers. I’d like to introduce and briefly explain one of the most advanced forms of healthcare available today — “Upper Cervical Specific Chiropractic”
The answer to my question, “What do those seemingly unrelated conditions all have in common?” is simple: dysfunction of the nerve system.
Your body was designed to work properly and heal itself whenever you get hurt. The inborn intelligence inside every one of us directs the function and healing of your body. The nerve system and spine are intimately related. Every single function in your body is directed and coordinated by the Central Nerve System and the Brain Stem. Most of the problems we see in our clinic were originally caused by problems in the Autonomic Nerve System after an injury or trauma to the spine.
Upper Cervical Care – also called Atlas Specific Chiropractic has been researched and studied since the 1920s. It is a customized protocol which focuses on the precise alignment of the skull to the 1st and 2nd cervical vertebrae in the upper neck. C1 & C2 are also called Atlas & Axis. The vital importance of the top region of the spine is the central nervous system that travels through those tiny bones and out to every cell in the body.
The Atlas and Axis (C1 & C2 – 1st & 2nd cervical vertebrae) are the most unique and flexible joints in the entire spine.
These two little bones at the base of the skull experience a great deal of stress from bad posture, minor accidents, falls, whiplash, and head or neck trauma. They are also prone to a high degree of malformation, dysfunction, and misalignment, so we take precision 3-D x-rays of each joint in the neck to design the exact adjustment for each person’s unique anatomy.
Your head sits up on top of these bones and your Brain Stem exits the skull and becomes the Spinal Cord as it makes its way down through the Atlas bone. Any type of problem in the body could be related to a misaligned Atlas causing imbalance in the upper neck. Dysfunction in this complex joint mechanism and intricate neurological structures is called an Atlas Subluxation Complex (or a vertebral subluxation).
Upper Cervical Doctors are uniquely trained Chiropractors who gently restore head and neck balance with precise adjustments of the Atlas vertebra. Once the alignment of this delicate region of the nerve system is corrected the body will balance itself, begin healing, and eventually restore normal function…without drugs or surgery!!
Clearing out the vertebral subluxation complex in the upper cervical spine has helped literally millions of people all over the world. Read some of the latest research online at the Journal of Upper Cervical Chiropractic Research (JUCCR).
Every day I meet people who are tired of the same temporary therapies that merely treat symptoms. I know most people truly want solutions – not just drugs – but something that actually corrects the cause of the problem and improves the overall expression of life and health. This Upper Cervical approach has been gaining popularity in recent years because it is a simple, safe, and effective procedure designed to restore the body’s natural healing potential. It is a fantastic procedure for children, teenagers, and adults.
I’m sure many readers of A Mama’s Story are already familiar with several alternatives to the typical medical approach, but if this is new to you, check it out! I’d love to help connect you with an Upper Cervical Doctor in your area. In our clinic we provide a complimentary consultation to see if this approach is right for you and your children. We love seeing whole families live better lives and conquer their health challenges naturally!
We can help you Be Your Best so you can experience optimal function through a scientific detailed protocol focused on two things:
1. Precise alignment and balance of the head & neck, particularly the top two vertebrae in the neck (Atlas & Axis)
2. Proper tension and function of the nerve system, especially the Brain Stem, Spinal Cord, and upper regions of the central nervous system.
At GENESIS Chiropractic we believe and teach that your “inborn life source” comes from God. His intelligent design and sustaining power is evident in the organized functions of all life. This “Innate Intelligence” is literally God’s power working inside your body to keep it alive and functional.
We also teach that you are more than just a body. You are a self-healing, adaptive, creative, vibrant person…a unique individual…mind, body, soul, spirit.
I like to tell potential clients: “I’ll help you get your head on straight!” And BTW, we do this WITHOUT any popping, twisting, cracking, jerking, or traction to your neck or back!
If you’re still asking, “What is specific Upper Cervical care?”…it is sort of a specialty within chiropractic, but that doesn’t tell the whole story. Check out this video page on our site.

So interesting that you posted this. We’ve been going to the chiropractor regularly for years too, but I just recently ran across an article regarding Upper Cervical Chiropractic, and was very interested. I love how being properly adjusted keeps headaches away, and keeps my immune system strong, but it would be so nice to hold my adjustments for longer than a couple weeks!
MaryEllen, I understand what you’re saying. I think I’ve only been adjusted twice in nearly a year. If you contact Dr. Blackketter, he may be able to find a practitioner near you.
MaryEllen,
There are several on-line resources for locating Upper Cervical Chiropractors. One of the most thorough is UpC Spine https://www.upcspine.com which was developed by a patient after this precise method completely changed his life.
You can also search for UC practitioners here: https://www.upcspine.com/prac1.asp You can search by region or by the particular technique (several different styles of Atlas approaches have been developed over the last 80 years).
Another great resources is Upper Cervical Health Centers: https://www.uppercervicalcare.com/
One last thought is to contact our clinic and we’ll help you find the closest, most qualified doctor to your home. 479.696.8000
When I was at chiropractic college they taught us many of the chiropractic benefits like reduced blood pressure, boosted immune system, and it can even have an antidepressant effect. Has anyone ever experienced any of these benefits themselves?
