Disclaimer: As mentioned before, I’m not a doctor. 🙂 I’m a Mama who enjoys reading, researching, and playing mad scientist in my kitchen.
I then re-visit our natural medicine chest. Over the years, it’s grown to an impressive size, but here’s a list of my fall and winter must haves!
- I keep peppermint and chamomile teas in stock, to help with queasy tummies.
- Eucalyptus oil helps with colds and stuffy noses.Â
- Nettle is a natural anti-histamine, as well as a nutritive herb for teas and infusions.
- Wonderful Wild Cherry is great for kicking coughs.Â
- For earaches, the children request a few drops of Ear Oil.Â
- They also take a good multivitamin or drink an infusion, made with whatever nutritive herb I have on hand.

- While we take Probiotics year round, I bump them up around this time of year. These are best to buy at a local shop, where they’re kept refrigerated. My Naturopath also advises switching brands after finishing one, to get a variety of strains.Â
- Out of all the cold and flu vinegars I’ve seen, this one is the best! It’s made up of garlic, horseradish, fresh ginger, black peppercorns, cayenne pepper, onion, and mustard seed–about 3 Tablespoons of each item. I add Apple Cider Vinegar, and when it’s complete and strained, will add 1/3 cup of honey. It takes about two weeks to be complete, so I begin making this early in the season. I store it in the refrigerator, and it’s good for up to two years. When we start getting a few symptoms, my husband will take 1 or 2 Tablespoons each hour, while the children will take 1 Tablespoon each hour or so, although it’s not their favorite thing in the world. 😉

| After sealing the jar with a layer of cheese cloth or saran wrap, I’ll store it in a cool, dark place, shaking it frequently for the next two weeks.
After two weeks, I’ll strain the vinegar, pouring the medicinal vinegar into a clean mason jar, label, seal, and store it in the refrigerator. |
