I used to have a love hate relationship with Valentine’s day. I hated how over the top the day was along with all of the pressures, yet I loved the extra chocolate treats that seemed to be floating around that day. I am also not a very big fan of commercialized holidays, especially the super cheesy ones like Valentine’s day. However, I absolutely love traditions!
A few years ago my husband and I decided to merge our ideas and bring on the cheesiness of Valentine’s Day. We were able to come up with some pretty sweet traditions for our family to show an extra dose of love to everyone around our dinner table. Turns out the cheesiness has turned into some pretty special memories, and it is now a big holiday that we celebrate in our home and all look forward to. Here are a few ways you can add your own cheesy and sparkle to your home on my once hated day.
Serve one another. In our home we put the emphasis on serving the other person. The boys always make the dinner (typically a low country shrimp broil) and the girls make a delectable dessert. Us girls prepare a couple of weeks in advance talking about our special dessert for this year and pinning like crazy on Pinterest. The boys have their hands full with the meal. If you have ever made a low country broil then you know it takes quite a bit of ingredients and time (especially when two of the boys are 3 and 22 months)!
Add the cheesy pizzaz. Put some effort into the little things so they will look back on it with clear memories. Who knows? They may turn out to be big things in their hearts. We always have our Valentine dinner by candle light complete with a leftover plastic tablecloth from one of the kid’s birthday parties from the previous year. My husband dumps out all of the low country broil straight out on the table. No plates required on our special night, only forks. And of course what better way to eat this way then in what everyone deems to be their, “fancy clothes.” The moment when the food falls in the middle of the table is quite the anticipated scene and of course the drama of who gets to blow out the candles afterwards 🙂
Words of affirmation. Everyone to the best of their ability writes love letters to one another. some are quite hilarious! Sure we try to teach this stuff all year, but it is so special to plan for it and watch the sweetness unfold as they all open and give out letters. The big grins and hugs are sweet reminders to always take time to say how much we appreciate someone. It’s something we unfortunately take for granted far too often.
I challenge you to take a holiday that can be filled with pressure and turn it into a day of cheesy servant hood, selflessness, and a little touch of the not so ordinary:)
