And now, meet our panel of Midwives!
Midwife #1: Carie Means
Carie Means and her family serve as missionaries to Oaxaca, Mexico. She has been a Certified Professional Midwife for 3 years. Her passion for birth began when she was 18 when she attended the very natural and very exhilarating birth of her nephew. She is grateful to her sister for sharing this very intimate experience with her, showing her birth is not scary, but beautiful. Shortly after the birth of Carie’s first child, 13 years ago, she began studying to become a child birth educator, then a doula, and finally a midwife. She studied with Janessa Craig, a licensed midwife, in a typical homebirth practice, at a high volume birth center, and most recently was able to spend some time with an incredible and very experienced Mexican midwife, Angelina Martinez Miranda.
In June she will begin a position as a staff midwife at a non-profit birth center in Oaxaca. Their mission is to train national midwifes, provide exceptional and much needed maternity care, and share the gospel. Carie wishes that all she does, both with midwifery and in ministering to her family, to be glorifying to God.
Midwife #2: Lucy Ferguson
I am licensed by the state of Arkansas and have been since 2002. I am also a CPM (Certified Professional Midwife) which is nationally recognized and allows me to serve Northeast Oklahoma and Southwest Missouri as well as Arkansas. I provide Comprehensive Prenatal & Postpartum Care, Safe In-Home Birth Assistance, WaterBirth, and Breastfeeding Education. I believe that God designed women to give birth and that pregnancy & childbirth are completely natural. My husband and I together have six children. I had three of my children at home and have extensive “personal” experience with breastfeeding. I have ten grandchildren and one one the way. I have been present for all of their births, three of which I observed and seven that I was very privileged to catch as their mommies delivered them.I continue to study all aspects of midwifery and strive to expand my knowledge of midwifery related subjects every chance I get. Waterbirth is one of my birthing passions–it’s such a delightful non-interventive measure for pain relief.Midwife (to-be) #3: Anna Tarbet
(Note: Anna is preparing to take her exam, but as she has completed her course and has experience to share, I am including her).
My name is Anna Marie Tarbet. My husband and I have two children, Keenan and Indigo. We are excited for our newest addition, due in October. After having a cesarean with my son, because he was a footling breech, I became interested in birth. I got involved with homebirth in 2006 and fell in love with it. Assisting women as they give birth and become mothers fills my heart with joy. I started apprenticing several years ago and recently finished. Indigo’s birth was my first personal experience with homebirth. It was so wonderful, and I am so proud to say it was a very successful VBAC. I’m preparing to take my exam this year and begin my dream of being a midwife.
Midwife #4: Venessa Giron
Venessa Giron has had a passion for babies and their mommies since before she could remember. Since her teenage years she has been a caregiver in one capacity or another. Her calling in the medical field began early in life when she started volunteering in the NICU and pediatrics in high school tending to the babies. She spent three years in nursing school before God directed her on a different path. It seemed that midwifery was her high calling. After a year of a grueling internship at a high volume birthing center, she finished up her apprenticeship in a small homebirth practice in Arkansas.I hope you enjoy this series!

Thanks for hosting this amazing giveaway and Q&A, Sara! I LOVE Above Rubies. I can’t wait until the next issue comes in the mail. 🙂
Looking forward to this week even though a midwife isn’t an option for us at this point. I’m guessing I’ll still glean some great wisdom! I tried to comment on the Be Fruitful and Multiply entry. Alas, it took my entry but not my comment. Oh well! Thanks again for being a blessing =)
Thanks for joining us, Jacinda! I look forward to my next issue as well. 🙂
Thanks for sharing, Rachel. 🙂 I hope you’re able to learn a couple of new things and perhaps even win some stuff, too!! 🙂
I’m new to Above Rubies. Thank you for the giveaway!
Lara
I can’t wait to learn about midwives.
Belle, I’m happy to introduce you to the Above Rubies ministry. I know several women who receive lots of encouragement from the magazine.
I love Above Rubies. It was through their ministry that the Lord spoke to me about totally trusting Him with our fertility. Blessing baby #5 is on the way thanks to that conviction! I’m happy to have met you too through Growing Home Blog. 🙂
How wonderful!! Congratulations on your newest addition. 🙂
I have had two natural home births, attended by midwives. They give exceptional care and are very open to birthing without intervention.
I haven’t heard of Above Rubies, but I’m checking it out.
Above Rubies helped to change my mind about children. We went from a confirmed one child family to a four child family!
thank you for show casing these examples of women helping other women…it seems the medical model today is scheduled c-setion M-Th….
I am your newest follower..pls follow back if you can.
I don’t know if we were supposed to comment here or in the Rafflecopter form, so I’ll do both! 🙂
We’ve used midwives before and LOVED them! We’ve also had homebirths and preferred them over hospital. There are midwives in our area, but they are becoming fewer and far between. And I am new to Above Rubies.
I am new to Above Rubies.
I love the Above Rubies ministry. I get their magazine in the mail, it is so encouraging. They have had a huge impact on our family when it comes to inspiring motherhood and the blessing of children. I had a copy of Breastfeeding and Fertility which I really benefited from before my second was born, the book has been lost during a recent move however. No homebirth yet, but I would like it! Love Above Rubies!
Thank you for the chance to win! 🙂
I also tried to comment on the “Be Fruitful and Multiply” entry, it took my entry but not my comment 🙁
This is the second time it’s done that.
Thanks for being a blessing none the less 🙂
