In today’s world, we are seeing more and more work-from-home moms who are able to provide both a supplemental and even a full-time income! For me, personally, being totally self-employed, it’s important to me to have multiple income streams, so that we don’t have all of our eggs in one basket, so to speak. Whatever your reason, here are 8 work-from-home jobs that are perfect for moms.
Not every virtual work opportunity is going to be a good fit for you, so it is important for you to identify your strengths and interests if you want to narrow down which work-from-home-jobs you’d like to try.
8 Work-From-Home Jobs Perfect for Moms
Virtual Teaching
This work from home job has become very popular. The demand for virtual teachers is very high right now, and the need is likely to continue for quite some time. If you have your teaching degree or if you have always wanted to teach, this might be an option for you. Not all virtual teaching positions are full time. Some great places to look are Outschool, and if you’re a Night Owl or an Early Bird and love to teach English, I’ve worked with VIPKid for awhile, and I absolutely love it. I also like that I control my schedule.
Pros: Job is in high demand. Can have high pay.
Cons: Requires a webcam. Childcare needed. Depending on the company, hours are set rather than flexible. May require a teaching degree.
Audiobook Reading
As audible and other sources of audiobooks have gained traction, so has the need for readers. For stay at home moms who love to read and have a decent reading voice, this might be the perfect way to generate some income from home. You may be able to find opportunities through Upwork.
Pros: Flexible hours.
Cons: Requires a high-quality microphone and a room that doesn’t echo. It needs to be quiet, so children will need to have other care during recording hours.
Freelancing
Freelancing isn’t only for writers. Freelance platforms have client posts looking for graphic design, voice overs, editing and proofreading, website creation, and more! There are a variety of options for freelance work, and it is one of the best ways for a stay at home mom to make a little extra income.
Pros: Flexible hours. May not require childcare.
Cons: It can be difficult to get started and gain traction. It takes a while to land the first gig and get a review to become more marketable to other clients.
Music Lessons
For musically inclined stay at home moms, music lessons of one sort or another could be a great way to generate some income. Numerous families are looking for all sorts of music lessons ranging from vocal, to violin, to piano. This is a great way for stay-at-home moms who sing or play an instrument to use their talent and keep up on their skills while also earning a little extra money.
Pros: Flexible hours
Cons: Usually requires childcare, and if you’re teaching classes online, you’ll need to have a good quality webcam and other equipment.
Virtual Assistant
Virtual assistant jobs have become wildly popular this year as business owners are looking for assistants who can help them as they try to run their jobs from home. Many companies have moved from office buildings to home in the past year. Virtually every company that can function having its employees work from home is doing so. This means that administrative assistants are now virtual assistants. As already mentioned, Upwork is a great place to start.
From a personal standpoint, our life-skills curriculum company, Skill Trek, has hired homeschooling parents to help provide customer service. While that wasn’t a prerequisite for the job, it’s been amazing to provide first-hand experience whenever customers e-mail with questions. I’m sure other companies have found similar benefits.
Pros: Can be high pay. Jobs are in high demand. No need to leave your home.
Cons: Not always flexible hours. May require childcare.
Data Entry
This job is self-explanatory. You enter data. It may sound boring, but it could be just the right job for a stay at home mom who feels her mental energy has long been spent. Again, Upwork is a great place to look.
Pros: No childcare generally needed. Flexible hours.
Cons: Repetitive, mundane work
Selling Homemade Products
Some people make beautiful crocheted scarves, gloves and hats. Others are into woodworking or creating home décor, or repurposing furniture. Whatever it may be, there is always a place to sell it! The increasingly popular Facebook marketplace, etsy, and other platforms like this make it easier than ever to sell homemade products.
Pros: Flexible hours, fun work.
Cons: You’ll need to be aware of the competitive pricing and you’ll make to make sure that you’re able to recoup your costs.
Direct Sales
This is the classic. Direct Sales sometimes gets a bad name but it’s actually a wonderful model when done correctly. If you choose a company that you know your family will benefit from, you’ll enjoy an awesome discount on your own products as well as enjoy a commission from sharing the products that you love. I’m one of those who is always on the lookout to save money, so I have “wholesale memberships” with a variety of direct sales companies, and only one has really stood out for me.
I think the biggest conflict is when friends and family think that you’re only promoting a product because you are paid a commission when making a sale. These are heartbreaking stories.
Out of all of the direct sales companies that I’ve been a part of, I do have a favorite! If you’ve been a reader for a while, you know that I’m super picky about the supplements my family uses. This company has the best probiotics I’ve ever used, and I love that their children’s multi-vitamin also includes a probiotic. This alone saves me money each month, and the wholesale discount makes it even better. If you’re a natural-living mama who wants to earn money on the side (of even a full-time income), e-mail me at saraelizabeth@amamasstory.com or fill out this application and we can determine if it’s a good fit for you.
From a business stand-point, for the once-a-year membership fee, they include your own custom website for a year! Just about every other direct-sales company I’ve worked with charges an additional $10 to $20 a month for this benefit.
Pros: Get products that you love at a discount! Build a network for residual income that not only blesses your family but also the families that you’re working with.
Cons: Some Direct Sales companies require inventory, additional overhead costs, and products that you may not actually like. Be sure to choose a company that suits your needs!
