Are Moms allowed to be sick? What a silly question, right? Everyone gets sick at some point. Why is it so much different when it happens to mom? What’s a mom to do to keep herself healthy or to make it easier on her family when she does feel under the weather.
Last December, I managed to completely collapse at Epcot while we were there doing our Christmas Around the World homeschool lesson. In an effort to hydrate properly for the humid Florida day, I managed to throw my electrolytes out of balance. This resulted in me utterly passing out and waking up in Celebration hospital. Three days later I was able to come home with a new appreciation for my health.
Mom being away in the hospital for three days was not good for my child with autism. It took us weeks to get him back on schedule . Not to mention the chaos that the general running of the house endured when the captain aka mom wasn’t there to steer it. I learned a few things from that experience that may be helpful for the next illness when it occurs. While no one wants to go to the hospital, the odds are pretty high that Mom will feel a bit under the weather some time in the future.
- It pays to be organized. Freezer meals can save the day when you don’t feel like cooking. A menu plan means that everyone knows what is for dinner as well as all the ingredients are in the house. It helps alleviate the conundrum of what to eat as well as the odds of everyone just eating out. Having a place for everything means that everyone knows where to find it.
- Ask for help. Moms don’t need to be martyrs. We tend to think we do though, myself included. The world won’t end because we don’t do it all ourselves. I have had to not only accept help but to be ok with it not being done my way. No, my daughter doesn’t mop quite like I do but at least the floor is mopped. If you homeschool then ask your husband to teach a subject that is hard for you. Don’t be afraid or too proud to ask for help.
- Take time for you. Your health is important. Make it priority. Eat healthy. Exercise. Set the example for your family. Your children will look to your example when they have families of their own. Make it a good one. The best defense to keeping sickness at bay is to keep yourself well rested and healthy.
- Schedule breaks into your day or week. If we have several busy days in a row then I plan an at home day . Sometimes the best yes for your family is actually a no to other things. God knew how important rest was to us. It’s called the Sabbath. Rest is a good thing.
Illness will strike your family at some point. Moms aren’t immune to germs although we would like to think so. Taking a few steps beforehand will alleviate not only your stress when you’re sick but your family’s as well. Take some time to implement a few strategies that will work for you. Your future self will thank you for it.
