“I want to homeschool but where do I begin?” is a question I often hear from moms.
The beginning years were exciting and intimidating, but once I started homeschooling, I was hooked!
While the list below is by no means exhaustive, these are my top recommended books and sites for those who want to learn more about homeschooling.
100 Top Picks for Homeschool Curriculum by Cathy Duffy
For the Children’s Sake by Susan Schaeffer Macaulay
Homeschooling with a Meek and Quiet Spirit by Teri Maxwell
When you Rise up: A Covenantal Approach to Homeschooling by R.C. Sproul, Jr.
The Socialization Trap by Rick Boyer
While The Socialization Trap is a very easy read–I read it in one afternoon, it inspired me to begin homeschooling during the early preschool years and made me question age-segregation even beyond the schoolroom.
So You’re Thinking about Homeschooling by Lisa Whelchel
While The Pursuit of Motherhood is written for mothers in general, I wrote the chapter on mothering and homeschooling a child with special needs. There are also other chapters written by homeschooling moms.

You have some great picks!
I would include audios from IEW such as “Nuturing Competent Communicators”, “The Four Language Arts”, “How To Teach Boys and Others Who Want to Build Forts All Day”. Andrew Pudewa is very entertaining and enlightening. I consider listening to the audio talks to be like a mini teaching course. IEW writing courses are also gems.
The Gurian Institute (https://gurianinstitute.com/) has some awesome stuff about how gender affects learning. Any of the books written by Michael Gurian are awesome.
Some books that will inform on the pitfalls of the current public school situation: any book by John Taylor Gatto (you can read many of his writing here: https://www.johntaylorgatto.com/).
He is very entertaining as well as informative. Charlotte Iserbyt’s “The Deliberate Dumbing Down of America” is also eye-opening.
Great periodical are The Oldschoolhouse Magazine, and also Homeschool Enrichment.
