We had been studying Japanese culture in school and discovered that this particular unit was going to coincide with the date that the Japanese celebrate Children’s Day. In general, “major” holidays tend to overwhelm me, but that doesn’t mean I don’t enjoy finding opportunities to celebrate and make memories with my family. This Children’s Day offered so many possibilities. The day was beautiful so we spent much of the day outside doing science experiments, playing Japanese games, flying fish kites. It was a lot of fun, and the children remember it with fondness.
I love Groundhog Day. I truly couldn’t care less if he sees his shadow, but I’m thankful for a day to make cute snacks with my kids or as a surprise for them. I love the nature lessons, the crafts and even math and writing that can accompany this day. The children are glad for a break from the norm.
We love to celebrate Dr. Seuss’s birthday or to have an Eric Carle Day. We’ve done Pioneer Days and Iroquois Days. Our four-year-old is thrilled when Buckeye football kicks off because it means making peanut butter buckeyes. Sometimes we go even further and have whole football fun days. Although we enjoy the games, it’s less about football and more about the time we’re spending with our children.
Sometimes these events are planned. Other times they are spontaneous. Recently we were studying Colonial times and foods. Our school time had consisted of many colonial activities, but I hadn’t planned to carry it into the evening. However, with a roaring fire in our fireplace we couldn’t resist a bit of fireplace cooking.
I would venture to say that nearly every day can be made special in some small way. Perhaps you are super creative and can come up with wonderful ideas. Others might prefer the Internet for ideas. Seriously, there are lists of holidays for every day of the year. Some are rather crazy, but sometimes those create the best memories.
Often these activities are meant to enhance our children’s education, but sometimes they are solely meant to bring our family closer together in love and friendship. Whatever the case, these are days to remember.
