Awhile back, I wrote a guide, listing all of the morning sickness remedies that I’ve tried over the years. 25+ remedies passed down by women for years! Some worked and some didn’t. Every woman is different, and every pregnancy is different.
While I’m convinced more than ever that the only cure for morning sickness is birthing a baby (morning sickness went into my 3rd trimester with one), I discovered some new tricks this time that has actually helped.
Before we go further, I’m not a doctor or a midwife. I’m a herbalist, in my 8th pregnancy (Lord Willing, 7th live birth) and have experienced my fair share of morning sickness. Please consult your provider with any questions or concerns, as this blog is not intended to replace your provider’s advice.
Morning Sickness Remedies & Survival {The Updated Guide}
1) My new favorite trio:
While any of these can be diffused on their own, the trio was super soothing. I set up diffusers throughout my house (one in every room) and diffused these oils every single day. Some days I added ginger to the blend.
2) My faithful standby:
This oil is a favorite of our family. It doesn’t taste delicious and in fact, my husband has often tried to argue his way out of taking it when his sensitive tummy isn’t well. But he always comes back asking me to make a DiGize capsule, especially if we’re traveling.
A word of caution: while our family uses it on a regular basis, there are some oils in this blend that should be used *with caution* during pregnancy. For this reason, I reserve this oil for when I feel I’m on the brink of dehydration if I can’t get things under control. With one of my pregnancies, I was so sick that I had to go on an antiemetic. After continuing to vomit and maxing out my script dose, I put one drop of DiGize into 1 Tablespoon of olive oil and dipped my tongue into it. Immediately, nausea and vomiting ceased. I would call that an extreme circumstance. As far as morning sickness remedies go, this is something to use under extreme circumstances only.
Under normal, but miserable, circumstances, I’ll apply one diluted drop to my ear lobes. I’m very conservative with essential oils, especially while pregnant, and I generally don’t take them internally. I’ve found that most of the time there’s no need and inhalation does the trick nicely.
3) Another old faithful:
- Peppermint oil
I’ve come to the conclusion that smells definitely trigger morning sickness. I’m sure I came to the same conclusion years ago, but I’m absolutely convinced of it now. I carry a small 5 mL bottle of peppermint oil with me everywhere. It fits in the palm of my hand or my pocket, and I can discreetly take it out when needed and inhale a few times.

4) Tea
- Chamomile Tea
- Dandelion Tea
- Mama’s Red Raspberry Brew
- Morning Wellness Tea by Earth Mama Angel Baby
All of these teas are delicious and helped tremendously.
5) A clean diet and more specifically:
I’ve shared THM-friendly recipes on the blog and have followed the THM plan for at least a year. When I follow the plan, the nausea is sooooooooo much better. The moment I step off plan, I feel it the rest of the day.
They just came out with a new and simpler guide and a new cookbook with recipes that aren’t included in the original guide. The cottage berry whip has been my saving grace more times than I can remember, and I can whip it up in less than 5 minutes. You can also find some THM friendly recipes through BAM.
6) A convenient spray, straight off the shelf:
- Morning Wellness Spray by Earth Mama Angel Baby
When I can’t carry around my diffusers, and I’ve not had a chance to mix up my own spray blend, this one has been wonderful. When I’m out and about and feeling green, I spritz my wrists or spray a couple of times in front of my nose and breathe deeply. The effects don’t last as long as they do when I have my diffusers going, but when in a pinch, this has kept me from making a scene at the grocery store on more than a few trips. For convenient morning sickness remedies you can’t go wrong with this in your bag.
7) The things that worked from the first guide:
- chewing gum
- lemon water
- rest
- fresh air
8) A change in schedule:
- boundaries
I know setting boundaries may not sound like a help for morning sickness, but with six children, some with special needs, and a busy schedule, I’ve moved all non-urgent appointments so that they fall in my second trimester. I also simplified our school schedule. And I did all of this without guilt. The changes have been a huge help.
Overall, I feel I’ve managed much better this time. I’m able to continue preparing meals for my family, able to function, but not afraid to lay low when I need to.

Love my young living oils! In general, I’m sick every day of my pregnancies and nothing take it away. I have found that chiropractor appointments do help some, peppermint oil has saved me a few times if I swipe it on my tongue or inhale, love diffusing tangerine in the morning to cover trigger smells, and lemonade, REAL lemonade, is fantastic to soothe and hydrate.
A few things I’ve found to help at various times: a splash of apple cider vinegar in a cup of water, a bath 4-5 nights a week with lots of epsom salts, pretzels, ice cream before bed helped ease reflux discomfort in the middle of the night, eating frequently even if its a bite or two, chewing gum. I learned that what works for one pregnancy didn’t always work in another pregnancy, trial and error helped me find at least one helpful trick each time.
