When I started homeschooling my little ones, I was very reserved about electronics and electronic learning. A firm believer in traditional textbooks and imaginative play through hands-on learning, I refused to have more than one computer in the house. I also strictly limited my children’s screen time.
The thought of their ever having a hand-held device never crossed my mind! When we bought a laptop so I could handle bookkeeping, I felt I was pushing the limits! And when my first tablet arrived, I thought I’d gone off the deep end for sure.
Well, my thoughts about tablets have certainly changed!
As it turns out, my “special learners” thrive using computers, especially tablets! I find this fascinating, especially since they both have such strong histories of fine motor skill weakness. What I’ve witnessed is a strengthening in hand-eye coordination, a renewed interest in learning, and boosted confidence.
The portability of using tablets is a huge plus! Having two children with different therapy schedules can wreak havoc on our most streamlined of routines, and being able take school with us is a real asset to keep us on track.
The benefits extend even to my typical students! Ah, there was a time when I fought it! E-books were on my list of things to avoid, and I wasn’t going to allow my children to get sucked in! We had so many books that before our second child was born, we had to purchase a storage building just to house them!
Obviously, we love books; but the idea of enjoying literature through a screen just seemed wrong.
As our oldest daughter grew, we quickly learned that she was also a bookworm. She carries at least a couple of books everywhere we go. Recently on a long journey, she finished reading the books she brought and asked if she could find a new one through kindle. After purchasing downloads of Jurassic Park and The Hobbit, she explained how great it was to have two books in the palm of her hand, no longer needing to lug around a heavy weight. Then the penny really dropped! With our tablet, she could own even more books without wondering where they were going to fit on our bookshelves.
Needless to say that this mama’s perspective on using e-devices has changed, and I appreciate the benefits of using tablets in our home school.
