Today’s post is by guest Maiya of Blessings, Bliss, and Bedlam. I love her wisdom to prepare for the future and encourage others to do so as well.
One thing I enjoy doing is reading about motherhood/homemaking, and listening to mothers discuss different ways of doing things in their home, especially parenting. I pray that one day God blesses me and my future husband with children, so I have been learning about different things and forming my opinions about how I will do things both as a mother and homemaker.
I know that there will be numerous things I will have to learn as I go, but I think it is important for young ladies to do their research and have some kind of an idea of where they stand on important decisions. Our culture is so focused on all kinds of education, and so NOT focused on important preparation for marriage and motherhood, which a large majority of women will enter into. But I encourage you, young ladies, to start learning and preparing now for these future responsibilities God may give to you.
I have come up with a list of things that I think are important for young ladies to consider as future homemakers and mothers.
Education – This has been a non negotiable decision for as long as I can remember. Homeschooling is what I am passionate about as far as education, and have read articles, blog posts, and books about. This is definitely one of the biggest decisions to make as a mother, so it is important to know what you want.
Vaccines – Understand the different vaccines, which ones you think your family will need, or even if you want to vaccinate. While there are articles you can read about vaccines in general, there are so many different individual vaccines out there, that it’s hard not to get overwhelmed. But you can look up a chart of recommended vaccines for different age groups and use that to research, as well.
Breastfeeding – When I was younger that idea didn’t appeal to me as much, but I’ve always known it was the healthier (and natural) choice. Reading about it really makes you understand just how beneficial it is for your baby.
Television choices – At first, I debated about adding this one. But I recently had a discussion with a friend about television’s family-friendliness becoming more and more rare these days. Now, I am not someone who is against owning a television, because I enjoy watching tv programs. But I think it is hugely important to set boundaries. And this will look different for each family; some are stricter when it comes to romance and others with violence. It really depends on what your personal convictions are/what God has laid on your heart.
Internet – This goes right along with television as far as media choices go. However, I believe the Internet is actually even more dangerous (especially for young men) than television can be. That’s why is it so important to understand and make decisions now about what rules and boundaries to set even now, before you start having children.
Some other things you might want to consider learning about as a future mother and homemaker are:
Gardening – This could be a wonderful way to feed your family healthy, fresh, and delicious food. It is also a great form of exercise!
Canning – This one can go hand-in-hand with gardening. It’s a great way to store some of the yummy things you grow in your garden for the fall/winter.
Couponing – Saving money is always a good thing! I know several ladies, including my own mother, who coupon and save big bucks because of it.
Sewing/knitting/crochet – Learning a hand craft would be a wonderful way to fill your home with handmade treasures.
Cloth diapering – This could potentially be a huge money saver for your family. But it takes a bit of caring for and maintaining. So make sure you do your research!
Cooking/baking – This one is a pretty typical skill for a homemaker, but you’d be surprised by how many ladies don’t know how to cook. If you can cook, but want to dig a little deeper, check out a local cooking class. There is always something to learn in the kitchen. And as the future homemaker, you will be doing a lot of cooking and baking.
Natural health remedies – I love learning about all-natural remedies and how different oils, herbs, etc. help with different illnesses. Read up on the benefits of basic household foods. This will also give you an idea of what’s good to keep stocked up in your kitchen.
This is just a short list of the things you could possibly do as a young woman who wants to prepare as future homemaker and mother. I hope that all of you young ladies take this time before you are married and have children on the way to read, learn, and seek guidance from godly counselors. Also, be sure to PRAY for your future family. Pray for you future husband, that he would continually grow in the Lord and grow in godly character traits. Be praying for your future children, that they will grow to love the Lord and desire to serve Him. Make sure to pray for YOU, too. Pray that you will continually grow in the Lord daily, that you will be strengthened in the character traits that will complement your future husband, and that the both of you would seek the Lord’s counsel as well as be directed toward godly role models to encourage you and help guide you through your marriage and parenting journey.
I know I could not have possibly listed all the things we ladies could do to prepare for the future of mother/homemaker. What are some things you have considered? Share with the rest of us!

Wonderful thoughts, Maiya 🙂 These are all things that I think about myself, even the TV and Internet- two things most people think of as so normal and just expect them to be in every room of the house, but there can be a lot of danger in them. Thanks for sharing!
