Yesterday I hurt my back again. Well, actually it’s my hips. Over the years, I’ve had the same trouble with my left hip getting knocked into a bad position. I don’t know why this is. Perhaps it’s from all those years of ballet and having to keep my hips turned out?
I’ve done great on the new 6 week challenge and while I was in the middle of doing some squats/leg raises, I felt that familiar pinch and shooting pain down my leg. I knew exactly what had happened and from that moment on, looked as though I needed a cane.
I had my first bout with this back in college, when after a few days broke down and saw our family doctor. After an exam and x-rays, my doctor put me on some anti-inflammatories (which I ended up taking every single day for about four months) and continued to walk slowly, carefully, and hunched over. Thankfully this was during the summer months, so I didn’t have a huge group of fellow students staring at me. By the time the fall semester started, I was able to walk upright and come off the meds.
When Morgan was 9 months old, I yanked that hip out again while playing with her. Dreading those months upon months of drugs and pain, I called up a friend who is a massage therapist, hoping to go ahead and get some therapy started. She said, “Sweetie, massage is great, but I think you should call a chiropractor.”
Not only had I never been to a chiropractor but I’d heard they were psychos, eager to mess with my beloved and extremely important spine. I wasn’t going to follow all those ignorant folks who loved their chiropractors so much that they couldn’t help but visit at least once a month.
But I was hurting so badly that I put down the $30 to see if it’d help.
I remember screaming when he adjusted my hip. When I left, I was in *more* pain than I’d been earlier. I wasn’t happy with my friend, who denied my massage and advised my torture.
I let her know that, too.
A few hours later, I felt better but stiff and still sore, so I took a nap. That evening I felt fine. No more pain, able to walk completely upright, and without a single dose of anti-inflammatories.
So, after weighing months of pain and hundreds of dollars in drugs against $30, a 5 minute visit to the chiropractor, no pain meds, and one day of resting, I knew what my future treatments would be.
My chiropractor saw me this morning and said it was so bad, he wished he had a witness. Now my back is just stiff and sore, so I’m going to lay down this afternoon and hope to be walking upright by the evening.
