The title comes from one of Frank Sr.’s favorite jokes: it often happened that when he and his family were out driving and stopped at a red light, a pedestrian would ask, “Hey, Mister! How come you got so many kids?” Gilbreth would pretend to ponder the question carefully, and then, just as the light turned green, would say, “Well, they come cheaper by the dozen, you know,” and drive off. **Quote from https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cheaper_by_the_Dozen
Oh my heart sank when Morgan asked this question. While shopping at the local mall, she saw a woman point to me and say to her companion, “She has too many kids.” (C’mon, I only have four! I know of way bigger families than ours. In fact, I have two good friends who both have ten children–one has ten biological children and the other has a mixture of bio/adopted. Plus my babes were a lot more behaved than some of the others there).
Morgan looked very perplexed as well and it almost seemed as though she felt badly for being one of my “too many kids.”
The first words out of my mouth were, “What!?! I could never have too many children.” I don’t know if we’ll ever mirror the Gilbreth family, but I want to announce that while a couple of my little blessings weren’t planned by us, not a one of them is an accident or unwanted, and all of them are very much loved and an integral part of the family (even baby Camden is currently working as an entertainment center for the older children. Who needs cable when there’s a baby in the house?)
