April 2nd 2009 is Autism Awareness Day (It’s also the one year anniversary of the day we learned the unexpected news that Camden was on his way).
Go browse the Autism Speaks site today or learn about any awareness groups in your area. Also, if you have a child who is missing any developmental milestones and you have that nagging feeling that it’s not because he or she is simply a late bloomer, make sure to bring this up to your child’s Doctor. Sometimes a therapy center will do a screening w/o a doctor’s request but most of the time there has to be a prescription.
And if you continue having that nagging feeling but aren’t getting anywhere with your child’s doctor or therapist, I’m sure you all know how driven I became a few years ago. I look back on that time and wonder what on earth I was thinking and how over-the-top obsessive I was, but I honestly don’t think Jared would be where he is now, if I hadn’t kept being his advocate, pushing for answers and help. (Note: Although Jared showed many signs of Autism, he only lacked one area for diagnosis, so it’s been ruled out.)
Also, be sure to check out any Early Intervention groups in your area.
